What’s it all about?

Life’s complicated, isn’t it? We live in a world that’s filled with so much that’s beautiful. Just think of a sunset in the mountains, or the music of an orchestra, or the smile of a loved-one. But at the same time, the world is also filled with so much that’s ugly. War, injustice, oppression and fear are rarely away from our news headlines. But what about ourselves? Take a look deep within and we’re often selfish, unkind, uncaring and indifferent to the suffering of others.

Why is the world like this? Why is humanity capable of amazing things that are good, and horrendous things that are evil? Have you ever wondered why things are the way they are?

Some today argue that the world is merely a byproduct of a natural process that didn’t have us in mind. Things are merely the way things are – right and wrong and truth are illusions designed to give an evolutionary advantage. Is that true? We certainly don’t live as if it was true, or life would be impossible. So is there another alternative?

The Bible explains the world we live in: why it is the way it is and where it’s all headed. In the Bible we meet a God who is majestic and personal – a God who lives eternally in a community of deep satisfaction and love. He created the world out of the abundance of life and love that is in Him, and He created men and women uniquely to have a special relationship with Him. Sadly we have all turned away from God and rejected Him, preferring our own flawed wisdom and passions to His perfect truth and love. This has brought corruption and death into God’s beautiful world, and leaves us on the path to destruction.

But God has acted in time and space to rescue us from our ruin and rebellion. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to live the life we don’t and die the death we deserve. By rising from the grave on the first Easter Sunday, Jesus showed that He had broken the power of evil and death. He now calls all people – whoever you are, wherever you’re from, whatever you’ve done – to turn to Him in trust and surrender. Through faith in Jesus we enter into life as it should be – life in community with God and His people. And one day Jesus will return to reunite heaven and earth, and we will live with Him forever.
